Pooja room directions that actually work

Why the North-East corner matters — and how to set it up correctly.

Pooja room directions that actually work

The pooja room is the spiritual heart of a Vastu-aligned home. Its placement, direction and even the colour of the walls subtly influence the calm and clarity you feel every morning. Here's the practical guide we use when helping families set up — or relocate — their pooja space across Australian homes.

Why the North-East (Ishan) is the ideal zone

The North-East corner is governed by Jupiter and ruled by the element of water — the most spiritually receptive part of any home. Setting up your pooja space here magnifies prayer, attracts blessings, and keeps the household's mental state calm and clear.

Which way should you face while praying?

Face East while performing morning prayers — it aligns with the rising sun and Surya energy. North works equally well for wealth and prosperity rituals. Avoid sitting with your back to the deity or facing South while praying.

Idol placement and spacing

Keep idols at least an inch away from the wall, never directly on the floor, and never inside a bedroom if it can be avoided. Multiple deities should face East or West — not directly opposite each other.

Colours, lighting and materials

Use soft whites, creams, pale yellows or light blues for pooja room walls. Wooden mandirs are auspicious and grounding. A small brass lamp, copper kalash and natural fibres (cotton, jute) bring the space alive.

What to avoid

No toilets above, below or adjacent to the pooja space. No broken idols, expired photographs or stale flowers. Keep the area free of footwear, leather and storage of unrelated household items.

Quick wins

Try these this week

  • Light a diya every morning and evening — even for 2 minutes — to keep the energy circulating.
  • If you live in an apartment with no dedicated room, a clean shelf on the North-East wall works beautifully.
  • Replace flowers and water daily; never let the pooja space feel neglected.
