Vastu for retail stores & cafés

Entrance, counter and cash placement that quietly drive footfall.

Vastu for retail stores & cafés

We've consulted on dozens of retail stores, cafés and salons across Melbourne and Sydney — and one pattern keeps repeating: the businesses that align entrance, cash counter and seating with Vastu principles see steadier footfall and calmer staff within weeks. Here's the practical playbook.

Entrance — the most important decision

Customers should enter from the North, East or North-East. The door should open inward (welcoming energy in) and never be obstructed by pillars, bins or signboards. A clean, well-lit entrance with a small auspicious symbol (Om, Swastik, or even a green plant) instantly improves the feel.

Cash counter and till placement

Place the cash counter in the South-East or North zone, facing East or North. The owner should sit facing East or North while operating the till — never with their back to the entrance. Keep a small idol of Lakshmi or a Shree Yantra inside the cash drawer.

Stock and storage

Heavy stock belongs in the South or West — these grounding directions protect inventory and bring stability. Never block the North-East with storage; this is the zone of fresh customer energy.

Seating, colours and lighting in cafés

Customer seating works best in the North-West (movement) and East (warmth). Use warm earthy tones — terracotta, mustard, deep green — to encourage longer stays. Bright, even lighting in the entrance and a softer warm glow over tables works beautifully.

Staff area and kitchen

Kitchen and cooking equipment belong in the South-East. The staff break area is best in the West or North-West. Avoid placing the staff area directly under exposed beams or near the toilet.

Quick wins

Try these this week

  • Clean the entrance with rock salt water once a week — it clears stagnant energy.
  • Keep a small flowing water element (fountain or fish bowl) in the North-East for prosperity.
  • Open the door at an auspicious muhurat each morning before the first customer arrives.
